Panchayat

A Panchayat is a body of elected representatives of the people to administer the affairs of the Panchayat Raj institutions. In the case of a Gram Panchayat, it is the main body that implements the decisions of the Gram Sabha and carries out the day-to-day administration. The main components of the Ezhamkulam Gram Panchayat are: President: E.A. Latheef, is the head of the Panchayat. He presides over the meetings and supervises the overall activities of the Panchayat. Vice President: Anitha Keezhut, assumes the duties in the absence of the President. Ward Members: Representatives elected from each ward of the Panchayat. Standing Committees: To facilitate decision-making, for matters such as finance, development, welfare, health, education etc.

History of Grama Panchayat

Ezhamkulam has a rich historical and cultural heritage that dates back to the Sangam Age (300 BCE–200 CE). Historical references to nearby Kodumon suggest that the region was part of ancient Tamilakam. The area reflects influences of Buddhist culture, which can be seen in local traditions and place names. Throughout its history, Ezhamkulam was associated with various ruling powers, including the Chenneerkara Swarupam and later the Kottarakkara rulers. The region played an important role in Kerala's social reform movements, with local leaders actively working against untouchability and caste discrimination.
