National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS)

The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) is a major welfare scheme implemented by the Government of India to ensure employment opportunities for poor rural households. Launched in 2005, the scheme guarantees at least 100 days of wage employment per year to every adult member of a rural household. Under the program, various public works such as pond renovation, road construction, water conservation, and agricultural land development are carried out. The primary objectives of the scheme are to reduce unemployment, increase the income of rural residents, and ensure the participation of women in the workforce. The program makes a significant contribution to rural development and social security in India.
