Ezhamkulam Devi Temple
Ezhamkulam Devi Temple is one of the major places of worship in Ezhamkulam Grama Panchayat. Situated in a serene and picturesque natural setting, the temple holds a significant place in the spiritual life of the local community. Goddess Bhadrakali is the principal deity worshipped here, and the temple has preserved centuries-old traditions and beliefs. One of the most famous rituals associated with the Ezhamkulam Devi Temple is the “Ezhamkulam Thookkam”. This centuries-old ritual is regarded as a symbol of devotion and dedication. Conducted during the Bharani festival in the Malayalam month of Kumbham, devotees perform the Thookkam as a votive offering to the Goddess. Historical accounts suggest that as many as twenty-one Thookkam ceremonies were once conducted here. The well-known saying, “If you climb a coconut tree in Kayamkulam, you can see the Thookkam at Ezhamkulam,” reflects the popularity and public attention that the ritual attracted. Along with traditional practices such as Kalamezhuthu, devotional songs, Kuthirayettu, and Aaluvilakku, the Thookkam continues to preserve and showcase the rich cultural heritage of Ezhamkulam.
